Developer Livestream: New World & Update Playthrough

The previous stream about a month ago was a lot of fun, so I have wanted to do another one ever since. The arrival of this new update combined with the on-going Steam event presented the perfect time!

As mentioned in the previous update post, the Stream will be 5pm UTC / 10am PT today and will run for about 3 hours. As always, come check it out if you want to watch, ask questions, or just chill :)

Hope to see you there!

V0.9.14 - Hot-fixes

This is just a quick patch to address some issues from the major villager journal feature released yesterday:

 • Increased chance of a villager sharing their interest with you and in general fixed some villagers never sharing their interests
 • Added quest highlighting when a villager repeats a quest and fixed the pattern sometimes appearing below the book
 • Fixed being able to rarely see an empty square as an interest
 • Fixed seeing the same interest or achievement twice if a villager shares it more than once
 • Improved some achievement names so they directly state which person the house belongs to: “Helped build a house → “Helped build Roger’s house”
 • Improved the heart and broken heart icons a little

V0.9.13 - Villager Chronicles

The long promised Villager Chronicles feature is finally here! This feature is a direct result of all of you voting on which AI feature you’d most like to see in the game. We spent a long time fleshing out how this would look and all the details that go along with it, from new icons and dialogue, to new technical systems altogether - we hope you like it!

By talking to a villager, you’ve always been able to learn more about them, but that information was difficult to keep track of. Now, as you discover and learn about a particular villager, you will fill out your villager journal, scribbling down things such as their origin, interests, goals, achievements, as well as the general conversation.
🏠 Living location
There is a new notion of a ‘living location’ which will always tell you where a villager lives, relative to other important constructions.
🏙️ Origin
There is a lot of new dialogue relating to villagers describing their origin. They can describe where they’re from, how long they’ve lived, and their reason for leaving.

This reason for leaving is something new and describes why they left their home to come join your cause, whether that’s because they were bored, or because their town was infested with dark spirits (or so they’ll claim).
🍻 Interests
As villagers do various activities around the town and in the forest, they gain experiences, which grow into their likes and dislikes. Your journal will keep track of their 3 most loved and 3 most hated activities.

We’ve drawn 27 new icons to represent each action a villager can do! Some actions are specific to certain items (like gathering wood, or drinking at a particular place), whereas others are more general (like exploring or laying down).

Just like in real life, these expectations can change over time due to bad experiences (like falling off a wall, or having one too many drinks).
🔨 New icons
To match this new design, we finally got around to giving the inventory and object items a fresh clean look. Each such icon is now flatly shaded with an outline to help distinguish it from the background and other elements.
🌟 Goal and achievements
When new construction projects start, or a villager gets motivation to craft something new, they can choose that as their next goal, towards which they’ll progress over time and aim to finish (some may be more motivated than others). This will be shown here as their current goal when you discover it.

After working on those goals and completing them, they’ll sometimes brag to you to about their achievement. This will show up in the stars next to their current goal.
📜 Notes
Amongst the most requested features has always been a dialogue log and on the right page of your villager journal you’ll always find a history of the most recent discussions you’ve had with that particular villager.

This means you’ll also be able to refer back to the type of quest they gave when you’re out of town on an adventure. Additionally, this quest request will be specially highlighted with a golden pattern so it’s easier to identify!
🪲 Other small changes
- Villagers no longer repeat what they just said and keep a short memory of their recent discussions too. This makes conversations much more fun!
- Changed founding villagers to come from different towns rather than the same one
- Updated look of villager background slot a little bit in the Townsfolk page
Closing word
We planned for this to be just the first double-page of many, with further pages describing a villager’s family hierarchy, personality, and detailed specialisation expertise. So let us know what you think of this feature and whether we should continue in this direction in the future!

Finally, sorry for the slow updates recently. I’ve been on holiday and have just recently returned, so expect faster and more frequent updates in the coming weeks! :)

Finally finally, I'm planning to stream the game this Saturday at 5pm UTC / 10am PT. Feel free to join if you want to watch me open a new world and try to build something interesting!

V0.9.12 - Improvements & Bug Fixes

Just another small patch to address some key things and add some general improvements whilst we work on upcoming new content and features! 🙂

 • Added an accessibility option to disable the depth of field effect
 • Changed the ESC key to first close any open menus before opening the settings menu (upon popular demand)
 • Improved continuous decoration by automatically equipping the next available item of that type after placing something
 • Improved the look of the banner and flag icon
 • Fixed the look of the lute when equipped and its icon
 • Fixed lute sometimes disappearing when changing items too quickly
 • Fixed the ‘well-nourished’ icon missing an image when re-loading the game with the effect active
 • Fixed being able to place structures on top of the starting campfire
 • Fixed being able to change equipped items whilst performing actions such as chopping a tree or mining stone

V0.9.11 - Emotional Outbursts, Monuments, and Nourishment Bonus
😄 Villager Expressiveness

Outbursts
When a villager is feeling an emotion, they now have a chance to express that through a small action:

 • If they are happy, they can do a little dance
 • If they are angry, they can rage
 • If they are feeling sad, they can cry
More complex emotions
Sadness is now directly linked to a villager’s personality, amount of social contact, and is also effected by food (happy tummy happy bunny). Meanwhile, anger is a separate emotion based on the current level of irritation from activities. This means villagers can now become happy when you simply catch-up with them - especially ones you are already friends with!

Some subtle details:

 • Villagers that don’t like you will become irritated when talking to you
 • Villagers’ emotional memory of conversations is now based on what happened during the conversation
 • Added lots of new dialogue surrounding emotions
 • All feelings are now saved and persisted between gameplay sessions
🗿 Monuments of Achievement
To commemorate your hard work, there are now three special monuments you can be inspired to unlock upon fulfilling certain conditions. These are:

 • A Monument of Benevolence
 • A Monument of Craftsmanship
 • A Monument of Establishment
🥐 Becoming Well-Nourished
Before, food was mainly a luxury that provided comfort and happiness to villagers who really liked eating specific treats. However, now, you can eat food to gain an impactful productivity boost to chopping trees, mining rocks, and helping construct buildings. This finally gives the whole culinary section of items and buildings a new and real use!

Different foods give bonuses for different amounts of time. Redcurrants commonly found in forests will give a short-lived effect, but delicious beaked bread will last much longer!

Food here specifically gives a positive bonus, rather than a negative ‘hungry’ status as we want to emphasise that it’s an optional effect, rather than a stressful need you always have to fulfil.
📜 Work In Progress: Villager Chronicles
We have also been working hard on lots of new content, as well as the new villager details page! These will arrive in the next update(s), in the meantime, here is a sneak peak of what our draft of the new book section looks like.

Feel free to give feedback if there’s something you like or don’t like on here! :)
🦗 Bug fixes and improvements
• Allowed the camera to be used on top of the tower. When inside, you can now simply move your mouse to move the camera. You can use A and D to cycle between positions in the tower. Note, sometimes it may appear you can’t take certain positions, this is because a villager is on their way there, and of course, it would be rude to front-run them. So (for now), you will have to wait for your turn for the specific place :). When inside, the toolbar now hides (for nice screenshots).
 • Changed item icons to have more standardised sizes
 • Fixed icons moving in your toolbar based on the current camera angle
 • Improved mastery icon positions in the Townsfolk page
 • Improved the game selector’s resolution compatibility
 • Improved the way tree chops are counted, and so also fixed axe hits occasionally not connecting properly and tree falling first
 • Limited cows to be milked at most twice a day
 • Fixed long-standing issue with villagers sometimes not hearing what you ask of them (some people thought the villagers were deaf)
 • Fixed the act of crafting fountains not inspiring any ideas
 • Fixed not being able to drag and drop from equipment slots for male characters
