Primal Fray Devlog #03 – Dancing with the Bosses

Hello, Sky Adventurers!

In today's devlog, let's talk about the most powerful enemies you'll encounter in the Rift: the bosses!

At the end of every biome (i.e., 3 times in a run) you'll face a mighty boss that you'll need to defeat in order to progress.

The first one you'll face is the Mechataur, who awaits you at the end of the first run (Ironclad Training Facility). Although it's a 'tutorial' boss, don't underestimate its rocket attacks – they deal quite a bit of damage.

Upon completing the Ironclad Training Facility, you'll gain access to the Elemental Run. This is where the fun (and true challenge) begins. There are five bosses ready to kick you right back where you came from.

Maestitia

This fearsome ice dragon fires a laser beam that damages everything in its path. Plus, she can turn the ground into ice and use it to unleash heavy attacks. To defeat her, you'll need to keep moving and watch the ground below.

Hortensius

The forest god can spawn bushes, which can later transform into Nature Spirits. The less bushes on the map, the better – while the Spirits deal only minor damage, they can still overwhelm you in great numbers.

Absun

This four-armed deity uses powerful AoE attacks and spawns enemies. The longer the fight goes on, the stronger those enemies become, so will you focus on the boss, or take care of the minions first?

Inferia

The lady of fire wields her clubs to rain flames on your Primals. To defeat her, is pay close attention to where the fireballs will land on the next turn.

Catus

This desert snake may not deal a lot of damage, but its wind blasts can blow your Primals off the map! Properly positioning your allies is key here.

As you play Primal Fray, you'll eventually encounter all of the bosses above. Good luck then (you're going to need it).

That's it for today's devlog. Let me know what you think below. Thank you for reading and see you in a couple of weeks!

Cheers!

Primal Fray Devlog #02 – Meet the Primals

Hello, Sky Adventurers!

In today's devlog, let's discuss the titular heroes of the game: the Primals!

Primals are the inhabitants of the Rift. Some will fight for you, while others will fight against you. Either way, you'll meet them in battle.

You can find new Primals for your team on special 'Recruitment' islands during runs. You can also exchange money for them at Esurius the Talking Panda's shop.

There are 3 Primal Tiers, which you can encounter (and befriend) in phase 1, 2 and 3 of a run, respectively.

Tier I Primals let you create simple strategies, like the Fungler below, who enables you to spawn a bush behind enemy lines and use it to deal damage...

...or Rheno, who lets you push enemies off the map:

Tier II Primals are twice as powerful as Tier I and can pose a real challenge. However, they also open up new attack possibilities. Cornus, below, uses a powerful AoE attack...

Whereas Dex can rain fire on enemies, causing massive damage, even greater than that of Mechataur, the first boss.

As for the Tier III Primals... let's keep that a secret for now. ;)

As you progress through the game, you'll learn the abilities of each Primal. New synergistic strategies will come naturally to you. How about freezing water, luring enemies onto the ice and then melting it beneath them? Hmm...

Plus, it's not like Primals are just living chess pieces. They have their own personalities. Upon recruiting them, they'll spark a conversation with you.

Discover new Primals and test them in battle! Be careful, though – your strategies can be used against you by hostile Primals.

That's it for today's devlog. Let me know what you think below. Thank you for reading and see you in a couple of weeks!

Cheers!

Primal Fray Devlog #01 – The Secrets of the Rift

Hello, Sky Adventurers!

First and foremost, welcome to the first Primal Fray Steam Devlog! Each devlog will cover various aspects of Primal Fray. Today's topic – the Rift!

The Rift is the mysterious world of Primal Fray. Here, you will encounter enemies as well as earn gold (more on that later). Every run in Primal Fray is generated procedurally, so no two runs are the same. There are 8 island types in total, and you can choose their order before starting a run. Each island type contains different types of hostile Primals, allowing you to decide which type you’ll fight first.

Not only that, but you can choose your next island to visit during runs. This way, you can plan your path ahead as you visit the islands on your faithful dragon named Carrot. Carrot will help you on your journey, although she won't take part in battles.

The islands of the Rift hold many surprises, but not all of them are hostile! In fact, most islands will grant you benefits, such as:
  • gold – you can spend it in a merchant's shop later; will you survive that long, though?
  • gems – needed for upgrading your Primals and your base of operations;
  • Primals – they will assist you in battles; choose carefully though, as certain Primals are especially useful in specific regions;
  • boons – they grant extra buffs to your team; for example, enemies set on fire can spread it to others!

The islands themselves are also procedurally generated, so you can't just rely on a one-size-fits-all strategy. Some enemies will fly, some will dig their way behind your Primals. Some islands will have water you can freeze, and some will have high ground where you can position airborne Primals. Study the abilities of both enemy and friendly Primals to win!

At the end of each run, a boss awaits you, ready to put your tactical skills to the test. The bosses use powerful AoE attacks, making it difficult to position your Primals and attack at the same time. Of course, there are solutions to that, like granting shields to your teammates – but it depends on which Primals you have on board. Will you defeat the boss and achieve victory or return home empty-handed?

And once you show the boss who's... well... boss (sorry), you'll return to base, use your hard-earned gems to upgrade it, and prepare to enter the Rift once again. This time, maybe with a different start boon? Or a different zone order? Or an entirely different type of run? It's all up to you.

That's it for today's devlog. Let me know what you think below. Thank you for reading and see you in a couple of weeks!

Cheers!
