Terraria devs want 2023 to be 'the year of Terraria crossplay'

If there's one feature above all else that Terraria players have wanted for years, it's crossplay between the PC, consoles, and mobile versions of the game. According to a new "state of the game" post on Terraria's Steam page, that dream is creeping ever closer, though developer Re-Logic is still stopping short of guaranteeing it'll happen...

Terraria cross play "in the works" as update 1.4.5 wraps things up

Terraria cross play has long been one of the most requested features for multiplayer, and the creator of one of the best sandbox games reassures players that it's being worked on as the team develops Terraria update 1.4.5. He also talks a little about the team's intent to actually overcome the community jokes around 'final updates' and put a bow on Terraria as developer Re-Logic looks to "start a new game soon."

Terraria State of the Game - January 2023

Greetings Terrarians!

Happy 2023 to you all - we hope it will be an amazing year for you and for Terraria! The team is back in action after a well-needed break over the month of December (which is why we had no State of the Game to provide for that month) - and work on Terraria 1.4.5 is in full swing. As you can imagine, most of the new stuff we have planned for this update is not quite ready to be shown. However, we have been able to provide a tidbit or two that we hope you will enjoy and that will increase your anticipation for this latest update. 2023 is going to be quite the year for Terraria, based on what is in our plans. Hopefully, it will go down as the year of Terraria Crossplay, amongst other things. As always, we enter this new year energized and empowered by your amazing support. We cannot wait until you can see what is in store.

Here's to another fantastic year of Terraria!

PC - RE-LOGIC
TERRARIA - 1.4.5 IS UNDERWAY!
As you may have heard, the team finished off the needed hotfixes for the Labor of Love update in November, and it seemed like a great time for the team to take a little break to spend time with friends and family in order to recharge our collective batteries. Mission accomplished on that front, and we are already hard at work with the next Terraria update that we teased just before we left for the year in 2022. (If you missed it, check that out HERE)

Most of the first few weeks of 2023 have been spent in planning out the scope of the 1.4.5 update and getting a few things rolling. As a result, we do not have a ton to showcase at this stage... but rest assured that when we have spoilers to share, we will do so. You know we won't be able to help ourselves!

We hope that at least gives you a little glimpse into what we have in store for 1.4.5. To be sure, there will be plenty more to share as development carries on. For now, here's to 2023 starting off with a bang!

Over 76,000 packs and worlds so far?! You are missing out if you haven't taken the time to check out the Terraria Steam Workshop.

Still working to find time for that cleanup - anyone with inappropriate or stolen content should not interpret a lack of action thus far as permission or approval.

Contemplating the future, dreaming of a world where Terraria Crossplay is a reality...

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

We've completed our localization rework for 1.4.4 and we are very excited to have modders using this new system soon. As always, we strive to improve the modloader with large amounts of bugfixes and features. This month saw some notable changes such as family share usability, speed improvements when publishing mods, tooltip fixes, and a whole host of changes to allow mods to function better.

With the localization overhaul completed, we are getting close to having a testing build ready. Our rough plans with the test build will be to put it on our Preview beta and give modders up to 2 months to play with it, update their mods, and provide feedback on bugs. If all goes perfectly, we hope to have this test build available before the end of February.
TMODLOADER STEAM WORKSHOP
The TML Steam Workshop has over 3200 mods already! Coupled with the in-game mod browser, the TML Steam Workshop is a great way to explore what modded Terraria has to offer - check it out today by clicking the banner above!
WHAT'S NEXT FOR TML?
As we shared above, we will continue to make TML better and better - and try our best to get ready for whatever 1.4.5 has in store!

As always, you can keep track the current progress and much more in real time at tModLoader/tModLoader (But note that the completion percentage doesn't mean anything, because issues and PRs don't have weights.)

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

PlayStation, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, Mobile - DR STUDIOS

The team at DR Studios was also able to enjoy a relaxing break over the holidays, after bringing everyone up to content parity once again by the end of 2022! It is so exciting to be able to do a sync launch and then push through all of the needed fixes by year-end and to have all Terrarians together.

Of course, we cannot begin work on 1.4.5 until there is actually content in 1.4.5 to move over... so we have started off the new year by working to upgrade the core engine and software library versions in preparation for the release of cross play. This ensures that we have a stable foundation for the years ahead. In addition to that, we are fixing as many bugs as possible along the way - so please continue posting them in the forums for us to look into and fix!

Our plan is to get all of this Console/Mobile specific work done in parallel to 1.4.5 and then dive right into 1.4.5 and once again launch alongside PC. After that, we will be fully focused on solving the technical and other challenges of Crossplay! Wish us luck!

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!
LOTS OF COOL NEW STUFF COMING YOUR WAY IN 2023!
It has been a ton of fun to keep innovating and bringing out cool new Terraria merch for everyone to enjoy. We also love having it all over our respective offices, homes, etc. 2023 will be no exception, as we will at long last be able to roll out some amazing pieces that we have been working on for some time.

The time is not QUITE right to share any of this... but stay tuned for what is to come.

In the meantime, all Town Slime Plush and the Cultist Hoodie should be back in stock this week at Terraria.shop after the Holiday rush sold them out!
TERRARIA GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES - FINAL SHIPMENTS FROM BOOK ONE SHOULD ALL BE EN ROUTE!
After some hiccups late in 2022 - which caused the shipments of Issues 3&4 (as well as Issues 1-4 bundles as a result) to be delayed into the distribution centers for 50 Amp - we are happy to share that all of these shipments are on their way. Be on the lookout for your package - some may arrive even before the tracking numbers do for you (long story short, they have to enter tracking numbers to send to you by hand, and they wanted to get the boxes out first and then worry about that after). Anyone with an active order should have received an email with this information over the past week or so.

So, if you ordered Issues of the Terraria Graphic Novel, keep an eye on your mailbox (unless you bundled Issues 1-4 together... in which case, you have to wait a bit longer)! If you would like to check on the status of your particular order - or ask any other questions - feel free to contact 50 Amp at [email protected].

Terraria item loadouts are a huge boon with one big caveat

Terraria item loadouts have been a long time coming, and their inclusion in the Terraria 1.4.4 update Labor of Love is a very welcome addition to one of the best sandbox games on PC. The change gives players the ability to save three gear sets simultaneously, meaning you can easily swap armour and accessories on the fly without the need to manually swap everything out. However, it's created one slightly awkward drawback, which fans are eager to see Re-Logic implement a fix for.

Terraria's Steam success is the fruit of unmatched long-term support

It's been quite the year for Terraria developer Re-Logic, as Terraria's Steam successes keep stacking up. The 2011 game closed out last year by netting the 'Labor of Love' prize in the 2021 Steam Awards for its continued support, inspiring the team behind one of the best sandbox games on PC to create a community-driven quality of life overhaul that would go on to become the Terraria 1.4.4 update, appropriately titled Labor of Love.
